“The Silk Road: Modern Iran and Ancient Persia” evening presentation by Sam Mehta &  Social in Westport, CT, Nov 11, 2014

The Silk Road ran from Western China, into the Middle East, through Persia (now called Iran) and on to the Mediterranean. It ran through more than a dozen countries, and crossed some of the most spectacular and inaccessible regions on earth. Sam’s presentation will cover one of those countries, ancient Persia and modern Iran. Sam will share images of his journey along the Silk Road in Iran including Teheran, Shiraz, Isfahan, Yazd, and Persepolis. He will bring the history of this ancient civilization alive by showing the dramatic Silk Road landscapes, including, deserts, cities and mountains, as well as the people and places of modern Iran

The Explorers Club Lecture by Sam Mehta: China’s Silk Road and Tibet, May 19, 2014, New York, NY

Sam will share images of his journey along the Silk Road in China including Lanzhou, Dunhuang, Urumqui, Turpan and Kashgar. He will show photos of the Buddhist caves with fantastic artwork that has survived for over 1500 years. You will see how caravans traversed Gobi and Taklamakan deserts on the way to and from Central Asia. You will also see images of ruins of abandoned cities as well as oasis towns. Finally, you will see the images of Kashgar, China’s westernmost city. 2,000-year-old Kashgar is unlike any other place in China. The fabled city greeted Marco Polo and countless Silk Road travelers as they entered the Middle Kingdom. Sam will finish the presentation with a tour of central Tibet: Tibet’s mountains, turquoise blue water, colorful artwork, breathtaking monasteries and the warmth of Tibetan culture all create a unique experience that leaves one with a lasting impression.
